Is there an easier way?
A full, comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation is a big investment of time and resources. Is there a faster, cheaper way to do it? Maybe. It all depends on what you’re seeking as an end result and some clinical judgement regarding the complexity of the presenting concern.
End result:
If it may be the case that your child would benefit from accommodations (e.g., extended time on tests) or specialized support in school, a full evaluation is likely required. A “full” evaluation at Sprouting Psychology will include cognitive, academic, visual-motor, and emotional/behavioral measures, combined with clinical interviews and review of records. This requires that testing be scheduled across two days, as it is just too much for most people to get through in one appointment.
If you simply want information for treatment-planning purposes (e.g., creating a roadmap for therapy or initiating a medication trial), an abbreviated evaluation may be possible. An abbreviated assessment likely replaces the comprehensive cognitive and academic testing with a condensed battery. Time and cost will be reduced accordingly.
Clinical judgment:
Before deciding to offer you an abbreviated assessment, I will discuss your concerns with you and ask you questions about your child’s history. If I suspect that an abbreviated assessment may be insufficient for me to provide you with an accurate set of impressions and recommendations, I will let you know. If unexpected information emerges during the abbreviated assessment that warrants further investigation, I will communicate this to you and present you with options on how to proceed.
